LED: Legitimacy, Efficiency, Development – Securing the Upside that Fraud, Waste, Abuse Misses
Reducing the annual $500 billion+ of Fraud, Waste, and Abuse (FWA) that afflicts U.S. healthcare is a worthy objective. Unfortunately, FWA is accusatory, placing healthcare tech professionals on the defense. What if we reframed the conversation with a creative construct that we can all rally around? Rather than merely avoiding the negative, we can build the positive twin, a framework I call LED: Legitimacy, Efficiency, Development.
Legitimacy Conquers Fraud
Fraud, at its core, is a transaction that isn’t genuine. If fraud is the villain, legitimacy is its hero. And legitimacy is easy to secure. Digital IDs and trusted networks provide a clear pathway: they tell us what to do, not just what not to do. Aligning with CMS-approved frameworks, legitimacy ensures that data exchange and clinical workflows are grounded in trust.
Efficiency Promotes Meaningful Work
Our healthcare ecosystem is full of inefficiencies that divert time and resources away from patient care. The “W” in FWA is fairly earned. But, by improving efficiency, we free clinicians and staff to focus on meaningful work, rather than chasing dead ends. AI and interoperable networks serve as hands-on assistants, helping physicians navigate longitudinal patient records and deliver care more effectively. Efficiency is ushering in what I call an Age of Miracles.
The Constructive Energy of Development
Efficiency and legitimacy set the stage for growth. Development channels energy into constructive pathways rather than abusive or wasteful ones. By fostering innovation and creating opportunities for trusted care, healthcare organizations can grow responsibly while naturally reducing FWA risk.
This three-part confluence of AI, trusted networks, and the CMS Interoperability Framework creates space for rapid innovation. Regulation alone moves glacially. Our industry must take urgent, voluntary, collaborative action to achieve the modern, connected healthcare experience we all expect.
At Health Gorilla, we are committed to helping healthcare innovators unlock value from their data, while honoring the responsibility that comes with access. Focusing on LED allows us to secure the upside of innovation, combat the downside of FWA, and build something truly great. People can rally around that.
